Felice Varini paints (lines, concentric circles, triangles) on things (tunnels, castles, groovy interiors). A seemingly random smattering of elements that, viewed from a specific point in space, coalesce into a tangible planar element.

“Between full and empty”
I am yet to see one of these in person, however, I imagine the effect is quite unsettling; the eyes struggling to focus on a element that is not there.

Sure, Varini may share the same ‘Dad….I Dug another hole…‘ syndrome that Christo suffers from - endlessly repeating past successes - but fuck it, Albers spent decades drawing squares within squares and the world ain’t hurting for it.
All images from Felice Varini another gem from Lars Muller Publishers.

It’s like Renaissance-redux, with a twist.
That corridor view on the right makes it look like you’d have to stop yourself, for fear of bumping into the 2d plexiglass cutout spanning the space.
It’d be cool to see him do something on the scale of the city, a la the MOMA QNS rooftop but much more visible to more people.
January 11th, 2006 at 9:59 am
John, Varini has done a few works at city scale. Check this out. However by the very nature of the artwork, it is only ever really visible to one person at a time…
Many more here.
January 13th, 2006 at 5:36 am
Really great stuff. I wish Varini’s site had more ‘off view’ shots to give the pieces a more practical feel.

Notes on the Denial of Perspective is a page that demonstrates paintings of seemingly random lines and colors that, when viewed from a certain point in space, form an image. These pictures only work in photos. If you’re watching at one at close range, your vision is 3D and your eyes can tell that the object is not the same depth. You’d only be fooled if you tried very hard. This could only work if the painting was outside the focal range of the eyes, which is something like what, 30 meters?

Someone should post a DIY howto to Make magazine ;-) It’s mostly a question of having a projector or focused source of light, projecting the pattern and then painting in the projected pattern, isn’t it.
I wonder if that’s already how they were doing during the Renaissance.

anyone care for a real dutch cube of cheese ? then at least this whole link has some purpose,
the purchaser of the company spending money on that gets the signature of the boss , who usually knows nada about good taste but has a 2 % budget to spend so he asks his wife, or takes a glossy to look what’s hip today, its cute , it’s nice, but so are my cows.
tilt his tail then you get the real perspective.
What’s next , the lines gives a sense of vibrations which makes working in a cubicle relaxing and and creates a devine atmophere?
Felice Varini sounds more artsyfartsy then Jane Doe. it’s based upon a name, Rembrandt van Rijn painted some lousy ones to.
Bless me father for i have sinned, I am doing the talking again.
