Lego is obviously the building material de jour for Those Interested In Building The Impossible.
First it was used by a Lego Moses to part the Red Sea, and now Andrew Lipsom has built Escher’s Impossible staircase in his attic.

The simplest of building elements rendering the most complex of spaces.

Why do I find this about a hundred times more disorienting than Escher’s original…? Insane.
December 19th, 2005 at 6:34 am
I agree. This is definitely a lot more disorienting than the original drawing. While I presume Geoff’s question was rhetorical, I will say I think the reason this weirds me out so much more is I always able to take for granted the unreality of what was going on in the drawing, whereas with a photograph, the tendency is to try to reconcile the scene with the way the actual universe works.

Surely this is only the beginning. Now build the staircase that only goes up.

Staircase that goes up?
Well the guys that did this one have also done the staircase too. Although, they do admit to using a bit of cut and paste for the illusion… I would put a lnk up, but it appears that their bandwidth limit has been exceeded.

Cock your head to the right and it’s not so disorienting.

Nicely done. I would have turned the heads so you couldn’t see the faces though, to replicate Escher’s faceless characters.
