[update] Ludd has posted a series of scans of the house Brad kitted out for him and Jennifer. The “leather sofa and chunky armchairs must be Brad’s idea again” [/update]
This gem reached me via a series of forwarded emails with so many @princeton.edu, @eisenmanarchitects.com, @dillerscofidio.com etc addresses that I am surprised it has not made its way onto the net. (that I know of)
It is difficult to determine exactly what Brad is up to. He may trying to insert a bit of hot glue between two contours that look they are doing a good job of staying stuck together on their own. Or he could be about to drill a hole in something. It is hard to tell.
Frank doesn’t seem too perturbed either way; his is the kind of architecture that can probably withstand even the most brutal of celebrity hot glue attacks…
I have gone on record in the past that I think Brad will make a most excellent architect. This photo does not help my cause however I remain faithful to the cause.

best story EVER!

even if it doesn’t have Ethan in it? Gee I reckon Ethan Hawke would make a rad architect. Miserable and greasy, maybe. But still rad. Any thoughts B?

Is that a wedding ring on the finger? If so, it must be an ancient photo! Unless I’m behind on my Brangelina news.

Brad Pitt, Frank Gehry and the Hot Glue Gun
Marcus Trimble of the University of Sydney blogs a goofy pic of Brad Pitt glue-gunning a Frank Gehry model as the architect grins nearby: ” It is difficult to determine exactly what Brad is up to. He may trying to…

well, i didn’t even know that brad pitt wanted to be an architect, but somehow he got to stand next to Frank Gehry and hold a glue gun. Wow. He’s made it….
October 7th, 2005 at 12:55 pm
I think you may be taking this too seriously. He may just be joking around.
October 7th, 2005 at 1:56 pm
Brad Pitt has been working towards being an architect for a while. he was recently pictured with rem koolhaas in one of those tabloid magazines. He was remodling his and jennifer aniston’s house.
Anyway, hot glue is EEEVIL. no respectable model maker would use that.

I wonder if Brad knows what it takes to become a licensed architect. Five years of schooling, 3 years of accumulating credits, and 5+ days worth of licensing exams (most fail the first time around).
I love that it’s getting press and more people are interested in architecture. I just hope this Brad/Gehry thing doesn’t make cause a “if Brad, an actor, can do it, so can my 4 year old nephew who likes to use Legos” remarks to hurt the credibility of the profession. Look what it did for web designers in the 2000

Hey these funky-looking towers are going to be about 10 minutes from where I live! I like!

Yet another case of a celebrity using fame, not hard work and years of study, to get into a respectable industry…….Hasn’t HGTV hurt our us enough?

I agree. HOT GLUE SUCKS.
Hot glue and foamcore models….ughhhh

I think you may need to calm down, Mike. There’s no need to panic just yet.

Hmmm, looks like there’s even more of a brain drain in that office due to Pitt’s presence: at least in the olden days Mr. Frank would resort to such *creative* items as nasty-old-fish-in-tin-foil-from-the-freezer to inspire his building-wrap. Now he isn’t even arsed to leave the the room: draped trace, huh? Astonishing. And good to see Brad’s getting some exemplary lessons in humane urban planning while there. I’ve always said that he’s a guy who’s all about the Common Man and cares not for ego.

Great photo. Although I think we should acknowledge that respect is due over at the offices of the Architect’s Journal magazine. They had this baby on page 1 about 6 months ago.
And there’s me thinking that bloggers were outpacing the printed press.
October 13th, 2005 at 2:36 pm
The printed press? bah.
November 5th, 2005 at 10:50 am
They told him (Brad) to pose and Hmmm….”lets hold the glue gun and look pensive!” “Genius!”
This is Brads finest work…”acting” as an architect.
November 7th, 2005 at 4:43 pm
I guess we got used to gehry’s “sloppy” looking designs…..no wonder the model making process follows the same steps….
Brad is definitely the victim here!
November 11th, 2005 at 7:00 pm
well. he really might be serious.
but doesn’t seem to have time being an architec lately.
oh. btw. do you know who took this picture?
i really need to know that.
can you verify that?

As Rob said earlier, It was in the UK Architects Journal a couple of months ago, so I think it may have been a pro photographer/publicity stunt.

It is a bit sad that fame in one particular profession
opens all other doors, for one individual, whilst so
many very fine Architects/Designers the world over who
spent years cultivating their craft, go unnoticed.
On the other hand Brad Pitt is an energetic creative
actor and if he can translate some of this creative
energy to Architecture then he may come up with some
wonderful concepts. Encourage his enthusiasm!!
Incidentally Brad’s fame will attract enormous
numbers to his new e2 show on PBS in June 2006.
This hopefully may open the eyes of the greater
population to the necessity of “Green Building”
promulgating “Environmentally Friendly Architecture”.
Remember two sayings:
“the mind like a parachute does not work until its open”
and also
“it does not matter who wins as long as there is success”

[…] Personally, I think this is a forgotten un-plundered architectural area. Forget starchitects displaying their wares - we need starchitects inhabiting their projects. I want to see Rem preaching market architecture to the masses in Prada NY, Zaha schvitzing with BMW worker-bees and Brad, well, going manic with a hot-glue gun. […]

I’m watching Brad right now talk about architecture on wttw Chicago(public lif access). Now I have read about Pitt’s interest in architecture before, but this is the first time I’ve actually seen it expressed by brad Pitt on tv. When he spoke of architecture and green technology he seemed to lack confidence and he refrained from expressing any of his technical knowledge and rather sought to express his romantic interests in architecture; focusing more on items pertaining to such topics as “architecture as religion”, “political architecture”, and “sustainable architecture for a new world order”. When questions about accusations of being a “wanna be architect” he seemed to be fumbling around for a change in topic. Brad Pitt seems to be using his fame to try and slip in and mingle with the phenomenon of the starchitects. what he lacks is a true integrity to identify himself with other architects. His romance with architecture is youthfully optimistic, yet clearly untrained. What he needs is formal progress to the next level so that he can attain the confidence he lacks. The person’s who inhabit Hollywood are notoriously desolate in the public confidence of their abilities beyond acting. He will truly need to abandon his stardom and either seek formal training at a university, or resurrect the tradition of the apprenticeship. Mr. Pitt speaks of architecture as religion. The concept of Submission has been studied quite thoroughly and is understood well by those who the world considers it’s pious. Whether he submits himself to the university or an accepted apprenticeship is his decision. Unless Bradd Pitt does something tangible, his architect facade is merely something to chuckle at.

Gehry revolts against architecture claiming that architectural expression and art has been passed off and forgotten, yet the sculptural qualities of these buildings 1) are developed by a series of unconscious sketches that lend no creditablity to the sculpture, and 2) are completely void of any spatial ideas or hierarchy. These serious problems are only magnified by Brad Pitts presence and I agree with lamia, Brad needs to run away if he ever wants to co-exist as an architect for any span longer than 10-15 years, even though he doesn’t know the amount of work involved in becoming an architect. These buildings are just fads and it sickens me that people uphold this guy as the leading the trade, and it sickens me that there are people trying to be architects that think this crap is cooooool….yah try telling a jury that I designed this because I thought it was cooooool…I would go broke or change careers if I had to build buildings like these in order to make a living. Frank O. Gehry has no soul. It doesn’t suprise me that he has many of his buildings built in California, the liberal capital of the world. They would love to have buildings like this because they are so COOOL and SCULPTURAL (NOT!!!!), but then will go on a world wide campaign for green architecture. Completely contradictory of each other!
